Ongoing SGSI Projects

Current projects list
The current SGSI Projects are listed in Table 1. The numbering system used is simply the Year (00) and the Sequence Number of the Project, e.g., 00-8. In most cases, the Project Name/Description is enough to see what that Project is all about. Each Project is further described in Project Summary Information Forms as shown in Table 2, which is an actual form for Project 00-8, Ebooks.
The Project List of Table 1 is an Microsoft Excel spreadsheet using hyperlinks to link to the corresponding Project Summary Information Form, which are Microsoft Word documents. This makes it very convenient for the user to find the information needed.
Project descriptions
In this paper, I will only touch upon a few of our ongoing Projects which might be of special interest. Details of other Projects can be obtained from the Project Leader through the email address given on the List.
Project 00-6 is one that has been ongoing for quite some time. The basic purpose of this Project is to provide a Master Index of all names being researched by SGSI members to facilitate communications between members with common interests. Currently, members are asked to fill out 3x5 cards with information on each ancestor being researched. This information includes:
LAST NAME; FIRST NAME; MIDDLE INITIAL
DATE & PLACE OF BIRTH;
DATE & PLACE OF DEATH:
NAME OF SPOUSE (ADD A SEPARATE CARD FOR SPOUSE)
LIST CHILDREN ON BACK OF CARD)
RESEARCHERS NAME, ADDRESS, EMAIL
The information on the existing cards is being input into a computer format which eventually can be uploaded to our website. The actual uploading will be a separate project. The expected output of this project will be a computerized database of all existing cards. (Using Microsoft Access). New cards as they are received will then be added and the database on our website will be continually updated.
Another interesting set of Projects is listed under 00-14, Chapter Resource Lists. Each SGSI Chapter has been asked to compile and describe resources held by the Chapters so that all Members can gain access to them either through the SGS website, or through the Chapter website.
Additional Projects have been defined to provide interfaces with various other genealogical entities such as World Gen Web and FEEFHS. Also, an interface has been established with the Slovenian Archives (Proj 00-11) to understand their needs and to provide support including money for a microfilm camera and copier.
Some of the other interesting ongoing Projects will be described in more detail in papers being given later in this Session. We will have a separate paper on our resources available to Members, our website, Internet resources, and finally, our translation and indexing activities.
Summary and conclusions
The SGSI is a totally volunteer organization which operates through internet communications between Members. This includes use of the various websites as well as email. The vast amount of ongoing activity is organized by Projects to assure that valuable information is not lost and is easily available to our Members. Eventually, as each project generates new information, it will be input to our website for easy use by the Members. Our Project List is a convenient way to organize the activity and to disseminate the information.
