Sedmina: ONKRAJ REKE (ACROSS THE RIVER) |
|
The poetry of Veno Dolenc, the poem Ljubezen (Love) by Janez Menart and the traditional Slovenian song Marija in brodnik (The Virgin Mary and the Boatman) are performed by:
Klarisa M. Jovanović (vocals), Veno Dolenc (vocals , 6-string and 12-string acoustic guitar), Boris Kovač (soprano sax and alto sax, clarinet, keyboards, sampler), Enzo Fabianistring quartet, Stanko Kemperle (tuba), Uroš Lovšin (lute, electric guitar), Slavko Meglič (double bass), Srečko Meh (violin), Miran Milič (percussions, vocals), Božidar Ogorevc (violin), Pavel Rakar (cello) and Mirko Šlibar (accordion). The music is composed by Veno Dolenc. Medieval and renaissance musical influences and the musical traditions of central and eastern Europe blend with elements from chanson and rock. The overriding gothic atmosphere of Dolenc's previous projects is now coloured in some songs with lighter, Mediterranean sounds. Arrangements for wind instruments, keyboards, and strings, except for the violin in the songs Vincent van Gogh and Onkraj reke (Across the River) by Boris Kovač. Sound engineer: Boris Kovač. Produced by: Boris Kovač.
"... A momentous return from SEDMINA ... this unique musical journey reflects a wealth of elements from Slovenian folk music traditions, the musical tradition of the Levant, the French chanson, ethnic elements of traditional music from the plains of central Europe … Most of the songs awake a romantic, medieval, troubadour spirit and at the same time sound completely modern. The album features excellent songs, utterly seductive melodies and rhythms, wonderful vocals and very prominent musicians."
Zlato Kreč, Delo
"... The ONKRAJ REKE CD is an exceptional music project … Veno Dolenc who wrote the music and most of the lyrics builds on the wonderful musical tradition of the Mediterranean where the influences of European and Arab cultures have mixed for centuries. His compositions function as an organic whole in which the best tracks would seem like exceptional traditional songs if it were not for the additional meaning which is decidedly modern and personal in nature ..."
Jure Potokar, Razgledi
"... The deep captivating voice of Veno Dolenc and the enchanting subtle singing of Klarisa M. Jovanović ... A touch of the Mediterranean, of Paris chansons, traditional Slovenian songs, a drop of central European sound, touches of melodies and the odd-numbered times signature rhythms of south-eastern Europe and the spirit of medieval ballads seamlessly flow into a unified, fruitful journey across a very tangible world ..."
Mario Batelić, Doktor Musik
"... ONKRAJ REKE is a great start for the new SEDMINA line up. Some tracks are enriched by a wide range of traditional elements that Veno Dolenc has drawn from Sephardic music, the music of the Balkans and the Orient and from the melancholic Mediterranean tradition ... A contrast lies between the complex metaphors in the poetic expression and the joyful and rather eclectic music, as if one were to come upon a medieval square just as a fair was reaching its peak ..."
