Joze Snoj was born March 17 1934 in Maribor, Slovenia as first and only son of Anton and Vera
Snoj. Two sisters, Mija and Breda, followed him. In 1941, because
of the German occupation, the family had to run away from Maribor to the mother's birthplace
Mokronog at Dolenjska; but again, this time because of the communists, they
had to run to Ljubljana. There Snoj graduated in Slovene language
and comparative literature at the Philosophical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. From 1961 until 1971, he was a
journalist in the cultural department of the main Slovenian newspaper Delo and from 1971 until 1993 an
editor at Drzavna zalozba Slovenije. He has been married twice and has
five children: Vid, Jost, Veronika, Zarika and Anton. He lives and writes in Ljubljana.
