Hello from Finland, Eno Elementary School

Here is an article about

Our school usually starts at 9.00 A.M. Some classes start at 8.00. A.M. but that is not usual. Not all of our students come from the neighborhood, so some of them use the school-bus.
We have a recess (30 minutes) after two lessons. Our 1st graders ( seven years old ) study about 4 lessons a day and our eldest students ( 6th graders, 12 years old ) have about 5 lessons a day.
Lunch is served in our classroom, where it is brought by our cooks. We are lucky to have our lunch in peace and you don't have to go outside your classroom. Meals are delicious and free for all students.
Every teacher has a class of his own. We've had problems with too big groups. 6th class is biggest at the moment with 30 students.
There are 189 schooldays in a year. We started our school on 17th of August this year. School is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, although you may catch a glimpse of GLOBE- students in our weather station. They are volunteers who take measurements during weekends.

In October we have one week's autumn holiday. This year it was the week 42 . The next day off is Dec. 6th ( our Independence Day). Our Christmas holiday will start Dec. 22nd. We'll start again Jan. 2nd. At the end of February there's another week-off ( a sports holiday ). The 2nd of June 2000 is our last school day. From that day on we'll have our summer holiday ( about two and a half months).
Computers are in daily use in Eno Elementary. We have a 13 PC lab and there is a computer in every classroom. Mr Mika Vanhanen teaches students and teachers how to use computers.
English is taught to 3rd to 6th graders. Our students have 2 English lessons a week. So we start learning English at the age of 9. English is the main foreign language in Finnish elementary schools. There are also schools where you can study German, French or Russian, for instance.
History is taught from 5th grade. In our elementary school students study history from the Stone Age to the beginning of the 19th century. History is taught 2 lessons a week.
Physical education is one of the most popular subjetcs in our school and we have 2 lessons of it a week. We have wild nature here to wander and there's also a great possibility to indoor activities. We have a hall for sports and an ice-rink where we can play ice-hockey, which is a very popular hobby in Eno.
Every school in Eno is a GLOBE-school. There are 6 elementary schools (grades 1-6), two secondary schools (grades 7-9 ) and a senior high school. They all take part in this program and our young people will be a part of this international environmental network.
