Valentin Metzinger (1699-1759)

A major exhibition of works by the leading 18-th century Baroque painter in Slovenia, Valentin Metzinger, was on view at the National Gallery in Ljubljana until April 1, 2001. Metzinger was born in St. Avold in Lorraine, France, in 1699. It still remains unclear where he had trained. Neither is it known what brought him to Ljubljana, where he was active from 1727 until his death in 1759. A comprehensive catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition. The author, Anica Cevc, the former director of the National Gallery, has been concerned with investigating Metzinger's life and work for the last ten years. The catalogue is in Slovene; the introductory study, however, has been integrally translated into English. Yet another publication has appeared in conjunction with this exhibition. This monograph on the painter was edited by David Krasovec on the basis of the dissertation he presented at the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg. The book appears as a bilingual Slovene-French edition.
