Emerik Bernard was born on 22 September 1937 in Celje. He studied painting at the Academy of Arts (1960-64, graduating from the class of Prof. G. Stupica) and pursued post-graduate studies in painting, which he completed in 1968. In 1985, he began lecturing of the Ljubljana Academy of Arts and since 1990 he has held the position of associate professor of drawing and painting.

In 1986 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale. He received the Zupancic Award in 1986, the Preseren Fund Award in 1987, but in 1989 refused to accept the Jakopic Award. After an initial stage concentrating on various types of collages and assemblages made of of waste material, his main interest now is painting (he spends much of his time in Istria, which can be seen in the colours and motifs of his paintings) and art theory.
