THE RECOVERY OF SIGNS FROM THE GRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE IN THE MOUNTAIN BUILT ESTATE: THE CASE STUDY OF THE TRENTINO - ALTO ADIGE REGION (ITALY)
The building estate of mountain regions is more and more interested by a transformation which involves the buildings at many levels, from the deconstruction of villages unit to the changes in the use destination to the introduction in the building process of materials and techniques not respectful of the site history; the transformation can even represent a real risk of extinction of such peculiar architecture from these regions, rich of historical and cultural values.
The domination of the urban models even in the traditional rural spaces is moreover clearly visible at the level of the building typologies and by the use of "universal" materials and technics. The last one took the command versus the genius loci which with few and simple principles inspired the building of poor but fully functional architectures, respectful of the surrounding environment where they lie.
Sustainable development is more and more the keyword according which every efforts must be made to assure the maintenance and a suitable transformation of the mountain territory and of the cultural and historical heritage represented by its settlements, even to allow the development and the fulfilment of requirements of the modern life.
The paper deals with a study carried out at the Laboratory of Building Design of the University of Trento, Italy, concerned with different aspects of the building estate in mountain environment with particular reference to those related to the recovery of traditional "signs" coming from the vernacular architecture in wood.
