PREHISTORY OF BELA KRAJINA
Many archeological sites reflect the density of life in the area of Črnomelj and its surroundings in Prehistory.Črnomelj is situated between two rivers - the river Lahinja and the river Dobličica. Due the fact, Črnomelj was easy to defend from different invaders.
The stone axe, which was found in tha backyard of a house in Loka - Črnomelj and is now kept in the Metlika museum, also confirms that area was inhabited as early as in the Early Stone Age. Other excavations show that the area of Črnomelj was permanently inhabited from 7th century BC - 1st century AD.
The cemetery with many graves and found valuable items dates from the Late Bronze Age. One of the graves consisted a 'pitis' - a holloware and an 'amphora' - a cargo container.

Many items from the Iron Age have been excavated in the church of 'Sveti Duh' (The Holly Spirit). For example, a potsherd of vesseles, animal bones and metal objects.
The most important arheological site from this period in Bela krajina is most certainly KUČAR(222m). It is a village near Podzemelj which was inhabited in 1000 BC.
