The inhabitants of Podzemelj and the
villages near Podzemelj are Christians. Podzemelj has its own parish church.
The church patron of it is St. Martin. The village was first named after
him and it was called The village of St. Martin. The church was built in
1228 and it was reconstructed in Barok. The painting in the main altar
was painted by F.Blaznik in 1892. Beside the church of St. Martin in Podzemelj
is in the nearness a few more churches, for example the church of St. Helen
in Zemelj, the church of St. Anthony in Krasinec, the church of St. Vid
in Griblje,...
Near the church is in Podzemelj also
priest's house which has been working since 1338. The priest in Podzemelj
is Lojze Brce who has been in Podzemelj for only three years now. Last
year (year 2000) have in Podzemenlj built a mortuary that is in front of
the church.
