The inhabitants of Podzemelj and the villages near Podzemelj are Christians. Podzemelj has its own parish church. The church patron of it is St. Martin. The village was first named after him and it was called The village of St. Martin. The church was built in 1228 and it was reconstructed in Barok. The painting in the main altar was painted by F.Blaznik in 1892. Near the church is in Podzemelj also priest's house which has been working since 1338. The priest in Podzemelj is Lojze Brce who has been in Podzemelj for only three years now. Last year (year 2000) have in Podzemenlj built a mortuary that is in front of the church.
